To preserve our glorious heritage and to inspire the future, we must continue to be grounded in our history and feel an extraordinary sense of pride.
One of the most important historical events of the Greek War of Independence was the Exodus of Mesolongi. It took place in April 1826. It was already several years ago that the Greeks began fighting against the Turks and were trying to regain their independence. Several Greek towns, including Mesolongi, rebelled against their Turkish governors, killing them and liberating them. In order to recapture the city, the Sultan sent an army to suppress the revolution. Attempts in 1822 and 1825 were unsuccessful, and he sent a stronger army in 1826. A year-long siege lasted within Mesolongi's walls as the residents fought bravely against the Turkish army. As a result of the Turkish encirclement, food supplies were unavailable to the Greeks. As a result of hunger and disease, the people started dying and the other Greeks were unable to assist them.
After months of exhaustion, the exhausted inhabitants of Mesolongi escaped their town on April 10, 1826, crossed the Turkish camp, and hid in the mountains and surrounding villages. Their plan was betrayed by the enemy, and when the Greeks opened the gates in the middle of the night, the Turks attacked and killed all the women and children, as well as most of the soldiers. Only 1,300 men finally managed to save their lives. The Exodus is considered a great act of courage and is celebrated in Mesolongi every year on the Sunday before Easter as the anniversary of this heroic deed. This day is marked by a parade in the city center and a ceremony commemorating the Greek Revolution heroes in the Garden of Heroes.
